Olympic Stadium standing tall March 8, 2010

The Olympic Stadium is now at its full height, after fourteen lighting towers were successfully lifted into place.

According to the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), the structure now stands 60 metres tall following the fitting of the towers that will illuminate the sporting action during the 2012 Olympics - which take place from July 27th to August 12th - and beyond.

The body stated that the job of lifting the equipment into place - with the help of a 650-tonne crane - was one of the most difficult engineering challenges so far faced on the project so far.

Commenting on the news, ODA chairman Jon Armitt said: "The lifting of the lighting towers is a significant engineering and construction challenge and has taken a huge amount of work and planning, complicated by snow, wind and rain."

He added that the good progress made means the scheme is on track to be completed by summer 2011.
