Retrofitting 'absolutely critical' to CO2 battle March 8, 2010
Installing eco-friendly upgrades in existing properties in the UK is key to reducing the country's carbon emissions, an expert has said.
The Department of Energy and Climate Change revealed details of its new Warm Homes, Greener Homes Strategy last week, which aims to insulate millions of homes by 2015, as well as providing green home improvements to households across the country before 2020.
It is hoped that the programme will bring down carbon dioxide (CO2) output from domestic properties by 29 per cent.
Commenting on the announcement, Gordon Miller, founder of whatgreenhome.com - which offers independent reviews of eco-friendly homes for sale worldwide - stated that measures like this are important given estimates that 75 per cent of the existing housing stock will still exist in 2050.
"Clearly retrofitting and bringing the existing homes up to speed is absolutely critical if we are going to meet our own emissions targets and reduce CO2 emissions," he explained.
