Kill the draught, homeowners advised March 10, 2010

Self-builders and homeowners who want to keep their homes warm and reduce fuel bills have been given some tips on how to make their houses more draught-proof.

Writing for the Daily Telegraph, Sarah Lonsdale suggested people should draught-strip the front door, which can be achieved reasonably cheaply.

However, she explained those who want it to be one hundred per cent effective will have to be prepared to shell out a lot of money for airtight, passivhaus standards.

Furthermore, Ms Lonsdale stated investing in draught excluders could be beneficial and advised homeowners to check out products by Wenko, which she believes has invented the solution to draught problems with well-used doors.

It is "door-width cylinders of insulating polystyrene, joined by a strip of material so the excluder can slide underneath the door and stays in place no matter how often you open or close it", she said.

However, people might want to have a go at making one themselves, which is cheap and easy to do, according to Guardian writer Sally Cameron Griffiths.
