Work to start on new shopping centre in Leeds July 23, 2010
The £350 million Trinity Leeds shopping centre has been given the go-ahead, creating 1,000 construction jobs.
Developer Land Securities announced the work, which was stalled in 2009 when the credit crunch hit, will restart next month.
The one million sq ft development will be the first major retail project to be built in the UK since the economic downturn.
Ian Williams, director of policy at Leeds, York and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, said: "This is fantastic news for Leeds. It is a massive boost for the city and the local construction industry."
It is hoped the development will create 3,000 retail jobs when it is completed in spring 2013.
The news comes after Markit and the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) released figures showing that the construction sector grew for the fourth successive month in June.
But David Noble, chief executive of CIPS, predicted that recovery in the industry during the second half of the year is likely to remain fragile.
