Summer holidays replacing home improvements? July 26, 2010

Home improvements are more important than taking a summer holiday, it has been suggested.

Andrew Leech, director at the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC), claims that homeowners are currently saving for trips abroad rather than spending money on DIY.

"People are thinking about going away on holiday and not spending as much money on DIY improvements, but that is rather a negative approach because really home improvements should take priority over holidays," he said.

Mr Leech's statement was made in response to figures from B&Q owner Kingfisher showing that like-for-like UK sales fell by 4.4 per cent in the ten weeks leading up to July 10th.

He added that the prospect of a good summer is prompting people to invest in garden improvements rather than home furnishings.

Recently, it was revealed that first-time buyers spend £3,782 on average equipping their new home, which equates to three per cent of the typical national house price.
