Construction apprenticeships for Liverpool's youngsters July 28, 2010

Balfour Beatty has launched a new apprentice scheme that will create training and job opportunities for young people in the building sector.

Details of the project, which will be delivered in partnership with the North West Apprenticeship Company, were revealed in Liverpool last week.

The initiative will provide apprenticeship opportunities in construction developments such as the £60 million Knowsley schools programme and the £56 million Liverpool's Wave 2 schools programme.

Training courses will also be available in ICT and facilities management.

Ronnie Round, leader of Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council, expressed his hope that the project would transform the futures of many young people.

"Apprenticeship schemes like this are vital to social and economic progress. This is literally a lifeline for many youngsters facing uncertainty in the current climate," he said.

Figures recently released by the Office for National Statistics showed that the construction sector's output rose by 6.6 per cent in the second quarter of 2010, contributing to an increase of 1.1 per cent in the UK's gross domestic product.
